Reductions in Medicare reimbursements started in 2017

About HR 2029

Medicare and Medicaid Provisions in HR 2029 were designed specifically to push medical facilities to move from traditional x-ray imaging to digital radiography within the next few years.

Starting January 1, 2017 payment for an x-ray taken using film will be reduced by 20%

Starting January 1, 2018 through 2022 payment for an x-ray taken using computed radiography will be reduced by 7%.

Starting January 1, 2023 and thereafter payment for an x-ray taking using computed radiography will be reduced by 10%.

Who does this affect?

Providers that are paid through MPFS (Medicare Physician Fee Schedule) and HOPPS (Hospital Prospective Payment System) are directly affected by this legislation. Private insurance carriers typically follow Medicare for reimbursements and rules.

What else should you know?

Since this is a direct push for medical imaging to be direct digital, that means the film market will end up changing. As demand for film products decrease so will with the selection. Don't get caught unprepared. Start planning today!
